How Many Hours Should Homeschooling Take?

Have you seen a homeschooling child in the middle of the day at the park and wonder, “why aren’t you doing school work?” I am going to let you into a little secret. Homeschooling does not take all day.

For preschool, homeschooling should only take twenty minutes with lots of play through out the day. For kindergarten, it takes roughly an hour a day. From first grade and up, the hours increase. Homeschooling is not public school at home. Homeschooling is a mixture of lessons, child led learning and lots of play. Lessons can include learning about fractions in the kitchen while baking or completing a math work sheet. Child led learning is when you go past box curriculum and research about your child’s interests. Play can include sports, field trips, play dates, and more.

My best advice is to remember, education is not a race. Some children thrive in math while other children thrive in reading. Don’t spend time stressing about not having a “typical” school day. Children are not meant to sit down for eight hours and complete work sheets. Children are meant to explore and learn as they go. How many hours does it take to homeschool your kids?
