Honest Moment: Homeschooling Isn’t For Everyone

I bet reading that title from a homeschool mom and blogger sounded surprising. This topic isn’t talked about frequently, but it’s the truth. Homeschooling is not something every family should do. I will add pandemic schooling in 2020 and partly 2021, was not homeschooling. If that period of time has pushed you to the side, “I will never homeschool my child/ren.” Please remember that time impacted homeschoolers as well. Homeschooling is not online schooling or completing packets and being home 24/7. Homeschooling is more than a textbook. It’s exploring your world around you and learning in a way that makes sense to you. It is going out into the world and taking what you learn and seeing it in real life. This doesn’t work for every family. It’s okay to choose public or private school over homeschooling.

-Do you need that boundary between teacher and parent? That is okay and one reason some families choose public school. Boundaries are healthy and important for everyone.

-Does your child need services you are unable to accommodate to or need easier access to? That is another reason to send your child to public or private school. Homeschooling special needs children can be hard and services can take a lot of time out of your week. Some children thrive better in a special education school.

-Does homeschooling seem overwhelming and during this season of your life, you cannot add another thing to your plate? Homeschooling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. When your plate is already full, anything can seem like it’s too much. That it is okay and in the future during another season, homeschooling may be the right answer!

These are some of the top reasons why families choose public or private school over homeschooling. Their feelings are valid and everyone has a preference. Families who send their kids to private or public school look at homeschool families and wonder why would we do it and I’ve heard the same thing vice versa. At the end of the day what is important is a happy thriving family and children who are learning.
